SJB 2009 Our Institute organized The ‘Third Switzerland-Japan Workshop on Biomechanics’ (SJB 2009), which was held from 1-4 September 2009 in Engelberg, Switzerland (http://www.sjb2009.ethz.ch). The Workshop was dedicated to the theme “Biomechanical Imaging: from Nano to Macro”. SJB 2009 brought together roughly 100 actively participating scientists and industry representatives from Japan and Switzerland and strengthened the relationship between the two countries’ biomechanics and bioimaging communities for future advancement in the life sciences. In particular, the Workshop gave an in depth overview of recent progress in the quantitative description, modeling and simulation of biomechanical processes driven by novel bioimaging approaches. |

Appointment The open access journal BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders appointed Jörg Goldhahn, ETH Zurich, as an Associate Editor. BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders is one of very few open access journals in musculoskeletal and associated disorders. It has an impact factor of 1.32 which has shown a steady increase since the first impact factor was released in 2004. It is one of the first journals within the BMC series that will be requesting input from Associate Editors at crucial stages during the peer review process, such as assessing the subject matter and quality of new submissions. Venture kick Pearltec AG develops medical devices to prevent patients from moving during medical imaging (MRI, CT). The team consisting of Patrizia Fischer (CEO), Thomas Müller (CTO), Mario Schmuziger (President) and Prof. Ralph Müller from the Institute for Biomechanics uses patented technology developed at ETH Zurich that leads to improved image quality, higher reproducibility and increased patient safety. Pearltec has now been selected for support by venture kick (stage 3) and received a grant of CHF 100’000 to test its idea on the market. |

3rd General AO-Meeting “Fracture Fixation in Osteoporotic Bone” The third general meeting of the AO Clinical Priority Program: Fracture Fixation in Osteoporotic Bone (CPP FFOB) will be held in Zurich from March 28 to March 29, 2008. The goal of the two day meeting is the exchange of information about the goals reached in individual projects over the preceding year, as well as to set the objectives for the year to come. The CPP FFOB Program currently consists of 12 projects which offer a comprehensive overview of the treatment of geriatric fractures. |
